Our Annualized Level of Commitment

At Web Collective we want to support owners' desires to work at different levels of commitment. Some companies call this part-time or full-time. We wanted something more flexible, while also promoting work balance.

Each member-owner declares a commitment level of 30, 35, 40, or 45 hours per week. Multiplied by 52, this gives us an annual level. This number plays a role in determining our salary. Each owner's goal is to keep within those hours.

We declared 30 to be the minimal level an owner can work to pay for benefits such as healthcare, vacation and company development. Six of us are at 40, two of us are at 30.

Another reason to annualize this number is that during project deadlines we tend to work more hours, then want the opportunity to slow down a bit so that we have some balance in the workplace.  That's hard to do on a week-by-week basis.

We're really proud that as a startup, we're running a successful business without working the crazy overtime hours that are often associated with a new venture.

Internally we use Harvest for tracking billable and non-billable hours, and have written an internal application (in Django) that helps us manage this.
